Consolidated Scout Flyer

Now used extensively in the civil + commercial sector, the Consolidated Scout Flyer (as mentioned in Spacecraft 2000-2100AD by Hamlyn Publishing), began its life as a military craft in the Proxima Wars. The CAM151 as it was then called, was used for space to surface scouting and proved to be a highly versatile craft. Fitted with a liquid hydrogen drive for space and a jet turbine engine for atmospheric reconnaissance, CAM151's rapidly found uses in all theatres of the war including scouting, raiding, interception and high-speed transport. Its VTOL ability found favour in battlefield situations, aboard carriers and capital ships and almost every Terran ship that could carry it.

After the war, Consolidated Aerospace looked to the civil sector with the CA155 version and found an outlet in a number of areas with which to sell the Scout. Various mining and exploration teams needed a scout ship for the investigation of new resources and planetary systems, which Consolidated was happy to supply. The TTA Colonial III, Astrolab and Consolidated's own huge Voyager colonizer and Connestoga super-freighters were each equipped with a number of Scouts.

The VTOL capability has been retained from the military version, where three engine vents are positioned underneath each side of the wings next to the engine and one either side of the upper wings. This has contributed to the Scout's legendary maneuverability, however all armament has been removed from the civil + commercial models. For its main role as a scout craft, it is equipped with a range of sensors and imaging equipment that can record an environment's details and store them until the Scout returns to base. Close-up sampling gear can be added, as well as specialist survey equipment which is usually fitted by exploration or mining teams.

The Scout has helped enormously the exploration of a number of key systems in the expanding Federation including the Menkalinan system with its massive mining fields, Esthymon which now ranks as one of the most economically-important systems in the Federation, and Procyon with its dusty quarries and mines. In the scene on the left a Scout is seen skimming through dust clouds high in the atmosphere of a planet orbiting Epsilon Eridani.
